Lewes
Welcome to "the First Town in the First State!" Lewes was first settled by the Dutch in 1631 and continues to honor its historical and nautical heritage.
Located where the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet, Lewes is known as Cape Henlopen. This location provides both bay and ocean beaches for swimming in addition to all types of fishing, water sports, and boating opportunities. Cape Henlopen State Park holds over 4,013 acres of preserved land where you will find beautiful beaches, miles of nature trails, bird sanctuaries and an education center.
Lewes is a walking town. Only a half-mile square, you can enjoy the Historical Society's complex and the historic district, containing many of the older preserved homes, museums, over 40 full-service shops that provides a wide selection of unique goods, ranging from antiques to modern gallery art, many fine restaurants where you can have a peaceful meal, and several inns, B&Bs and motels where you can enjoy a comfortable night's rest after a day on the town.
Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes named one of the Top Five Beaches North of Florida by Stephen P. Leatherman, better known as "Dr. Beach". The Dr was asked to come up with five East Coast beaches outside of Florida that are visitor-friendly, relaxing, crowd-free and inexpensive.
